North East Otago through the lens
Creating a website to showcase all that is great about any location is challenging and the 'North East' of Otago is no exception.
What you consider to be 'special' about a given location could be for a variety of reasons other than it's natural beauty - an emotional connection or memory for example. Taking photographs to illustrate the 'essence' of a location in a way which captivates others is not easy.
So we were faced with two challenges, firstly an abundance of unique and outstanding locations to select from to map & share, and secondly sourcing photography which illustrates to you what we already know is special about that location.
Initially we set out to photograph each North East Otago location ourselves and a number of photographs taken by the writer do feature on the site, as do images captured over the past two years at various local events.
However, we can all go and take a photo of the sea for example, but to take 'that' photo, having waited, in any weather, for an instance where the photographer considers the frame to be perfection is where photography becomes art.
A great photographer is able to invoke our emotions through imagery. The photographer essentially puts their heart and soul into their work, and its shows.
So, rather than traversing North East Otago to try and recreate that special image for every location we looked to local photographers to contact after 'discovering' their images on Flickr of Facebook. Hours of searching identified a pool of seriously talented photographers.
It was the work of two particular photographers that consistently stood out and which we feel truly reflects the beauty of the locations within North East Otago.
