IAN THOMSON

Ian Thomson, Dunedin

By the time you have read this introduction we are sure you will have already been inspired by Ian's work which forms the majority of photography for North East Otago Discoveries.

While hours were spent searching for images of our locations, it was Ian Thomson's photography which helped to inspire the development of this website and many of those hours were spent viewing Ian's portfolio, which is significant and unique.

Ian has a natural ability to photograph that 'essence' of a location which in the writer's opinion is captivating. It draws you into the scene. There is an element of romanticism with each image which overrides the method and skill required to produce an image which reflects each location.

We approached Ian who has agreed to allow us to use his images and we consider that Ian deserves recognition for his work.

Ian's photography is truly outstanding in our view and on request for a biography Ian provided us with the paragraphs below which provide a brief insight.

"Two of my grandparents and both my parents were proficient photographers and my father encouraged me to join the local photography club when I started high school in the small town of Waimate. After moving to Dunedin for Uni and getting a job I joined the Dunedin Photographic Society about 40 years ago. Through frequent competitions and the critique that went with them my skills gradually improved until I was able to complete the honour of a fellowship of the NZ Photographic Society about 12 years ago. I specialise in landscapes but also enjoy taking events, close-ups and night skies."

As mentioned, Ian's portfolio is significant and we have provided a link below to Ian's Flickr albums which feature the original images used in a variety of sizes. Ian can be contacted through the Flickr page.

Thank you Ian.
