NORTH EAST OTAGO DISCOVERIES
Karitāne
Karitāne — was the name given to the mission establishment of the Rev. Mr. Creed, facing the bay, on a sandy terrace alongside the Maori village and the marae or green called Hau-te-kapakapa
Karitāne beach is very popular with surfers, and the walk around the Huirawa Peninsula offers spectacular views and provides information about Māori settlement of the area.
Waikouaiti
Pronounced Wai - kou - a - iti (end/crossing of little wading or swimming rivers/streams).
Waikouaiti can be described as 'richly authentic'.
As the founding township of Otago, Waikouaiti remains a classic example of a pioneering village, both rich in history and sense of community.
WAiTATi
Originally Waitete - a stream flowing into Blueskin Bay and now known as Waitati.
Waitati is a busy, colourful & vibrant country community, centred around the ‘Village’ and stretching around to Opeke, Miches Crossing & Doctors Point eastward and includes Orokonui Valley & Waitati Valley which heads up towards the Silverpeaks.
Warrington
Ōkāhau in Māori, Warrington sits on the northern side of Blueskin Bay off Coast Road.
Warrington Beach is a long white sandy beach stretching the coast with views South to Mapoutahi Pā, Purakaunui and Aramoana in the distance. The coastal cliffs of Doctor’s Point Beach create a striking vista. What’s more, you can often walk the beach towards the mouth of Blueskin Bay estuary and not see another human.
Seacliff
The road to Seacliff twists and turns over and back again across the train tracks between Oamaru and Dunedin. In her Autobiography, Janet Frame recounts taking that ride many times before and after her stay at the asylum, and each time, as the train passed the Seacliff station, she’d think, “the loonies were there,” though, “Often it was hard to tell who were the loonies.”
Following Coast Road, between Karitāne & Warrington, arriving at Seacliff for the first time can be an experience of mixed emotion.
Doctor's Point
During the early 1900's a group of doctors purchased sections near the beach to create a reserve.
As its name suggests, 'Doctor's Point Reserve' as we know it today was historically privately owned residential land.
Located at the mouth of Blueskin Bay Estuary, Doctor's Point is a beautiful location popular for its white sand and crystal clear blue sea which sets the perfect scene for a hot summers day.
Purakaunui
Te Wera, the Chief of the Kai Tahu, had a pā at Huriawa. After an unsuccessful siege of Huriawa by his feuding uncle, Taoka, from Pukekura (Taiaroa Head), an ally of Te Wera's, Te Pakihaukea, shifted to Purakanui and relocated Mapoutahi Pā
Pūrākaunui, like much of North East Otago is rich in Māori history. The meandering Pūrākaunui Road heads downward towards stunning and at times isolated beaches, bound by natural beauty.
