More information

It is important to time your visit so you are there at low tide when the sea reveals an expansive beach, along-side dramatic cliff faces, black stone caves and arches.

If you do go at low tide only, you can walk north-east along the sand to little Canoe Beach and the small Mapoutahi headland, an historic fortified Maori Pa. A narrow sandy track and staircase cuts through the headland's neck to reach Purakanui Beach. Above, high on the cliffs you may spot the occasion train heading towards the historic brick tunnel heading to Port Chalmers or North via Waitati.
