A Memorial opposite 191 Beach Street which commemorates the arrival of pioneering businessman John Jones from Sydney in the brig Magnet on March 16, 1840.

It is recorded that Johnny Jones wanted to make Waikouaiti a city with a great harbour but it was too shallow. He wanted the location of Waikouaiti to be 'Dunedin'.
