The most beautiful view in the world?
Quite an assumption you may think
But that is how pioneers described the panorama from Mopanui, with jaw dropping vistas North, South, East & West across what we know is one of the most beautiful places on earth, Otago.
So, could this really be the most beautiful view in the world? You will have to see for yourself.
Introducing Waitati Trails
Prior to 1860 and construction of 'State Highways', the Mopanui Bridle Track or 'The Hump' as it was known, served as a trading route and possibly halfway point for pioneering commuters, either travelling on foot, or by horse & dray to Port Chalmers.
Without the comforts of modern day, these routes were tough going and the stunning views over what would have then been a new city in the making were perhaps the only consolation for journeys that were very demanding & rigourous.
Today, and known as the 'Mopanui Ridgeline Track' this section of pioneering trail is complemented by 7 further trails which take in the abundance of natural beauty and peace & tranquility that was likely experienced back in 1860, but without the hard labour!
Waitati Trails includes the Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary perimeter tracks, where bird song and wildlife are in abundance and native birdlife are thriving within their safe habitats which have been protected by the restorative work of the sanctuary.
Here at North East Otago Discoveries we have defined these walks as the WAiTATi TRAiLS
Each individual trail takes its own unique pathway over distances between 0.7km to 6.5km; and over various terrains suitable for all skill levels from the meandering day tripper to seasoned rambler.
Check out each trail below and plan a visit and enjoy a breath-taking experience.
